Cognitive & Nootropic Peptides
Cognitive peptides target attention, memory, mood, and neuroprotection. The category includes Russian-developed nootropic peptides (Semax, Selank, Cerebrolysin), engineered analogs (Dihexa, P21, NSI-189), and adjacent racetam-family compounds. Evidence quality is uneven — some compounds have decades of clinical use in Russia and Eastern Europe, others remain firmly preclinical.
Russian Nootropic Peptides
Semax and Selank are the two most-prescribed Russian nootropic peptides, with decades of clinical use as authorized medications in Russia. Cerebrolysin is a peptide-amino-acid mixture derived from porcine brain, marketed for stroke and cognitive impairment in over 50 countries. All three have substantial clinical literature, though most of it is non-English.
Engineered Cognitive Analogs
Dihexa is an engineered angiotensin IV analog with documented neurogenic and synaptogenic activity in animal models. P21 is a CNTF mimetic peptide with hippocampal neurogenic activity. NSI-189 is a small molecule (not technically a peptide, but clustered in the nootropic research market) targeting hippocampal neurogenesis. These compounds have promising pre-clinical data but limited human clinical evidence.
Adjacent Compounds: Noopept
Noopept is a dipeptide nootropic with substantial Russian clinical use. It is structurally peptide-related but pharmacokinetically more drug-like than most research peptides. The compound is widely sold in the peptide marketplace despite its hybrid classification.
Cognitive Peptide Stacks
Some researchers combine cognitive peptides with growth/repair peptides for putative synergy — Semax+Selank, Cerebrolysin+BPC-157, or Dihexa-based protocols. See the peptide stacks guide and nootropic peptides guide for protocol context.
Administration Routes
Many cognitive peptides are administered intranasally rather than subcutaneously — bypassing peripheral degradation and accelerating CNS entry. Semax, Selank, and Cerebrolysin are commonly used intranasally. This route requires different reconstitution and storage handling — see reconstitution operations.
Supplier Quality for Cognitive Compounds
Cognitive peptides face the same quality variance as the rest of the research market. Mass-spec identity confirmation is especially important for the Russian-developed compounds, where mis-synthesis and impurity issues are commonly reported. Oath Peptides and other Tier 1 vendors carry the major cognitive peptides with full COA documentation.
